Attendance Requirements
School attendance is compulsory for students between the ages of six and
fifteen years. (Education Reform Act 1990)
Students over fifteen years have chosen to continue their education and
should attend school regularly so that they fulfil the requirements for
the award of the School Certificate.
Absences must be explained within 7 days, and it is recommended that the
parent or caregiver provides a note on the first day a student returns
after an absence. For unforeseen or prolonged absences it is requested
that parents or caregivers telephone the school and speak to the Student
Adviser, Head Teacher Administration/Welfare or Clerical Staff.
School commences at 8:50 am, and students are expected to be punctual.
Rolls are marked each morning in period 1 at 8:50 am. The daily absentee
sheet is circulated to all teachers and these lists are checked during
each lesson to ensure students are present in all lessons. Fractional
truants will be severely dealt with and parents will be notified.
Homework
Homework enhances learning. Homework set by the subject teacher will be
recorded in the Student Planner. Parents and teachers should encourage
students to regularly complete and revise class work at home.
Research has shown that new material has a far better chance of being
understood and retained if it is revised within 24 hours of the first
lesson. Hence, all students should spend some time each night reviewing
lessons. This can take the form of completing work set, rereading notes,
adding headings, highlighting, practising exercises, summarising etc.
